Guns N' Roses: one of the most successful bands of all time

This bonafide rock n' roll phenomenon first formed in Los Angeles in 1985, rising from the ashes of two famous West Coast hard rock outfits – L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose. With rock legend Axl Rose at the helm and Slash on the strings, the outfit soon garnered a fearsome reputation as the wildest rock band of the decade. Taking inspiration from the likes of Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith, the band melted heavy metal with Indiana style blues, creating a fresh branch of rock for a whole new generation.

The group burst to global fame and acclaim with their heartfelt hard rock anthem "Sweet Child O' Mine", which has been cited as the inspiration for a wealth of other bands including Red Hot Chili Peppers and Steel Panther. Their belligerent breakthrough album Appetite for Destruction soared to number one in the Billboard Charts and went on to sell over 28 million copies worldwide – making it one of the most successful albums in US history.

Moving into the '90s, the band went on to garner over 100 million record sales, spending the decade headlining festivals across the globe. "November Rain" has topped polls as the greatest power ballad of all time and continues to excite music lovers today despite approaching its 25th birthday. As of 2016, the nine-minute opus is the most viewed music video on YouTube not made in the 21st Century – a true testament both to Axl's songwriting prowess and the band's eternal relevance.

Their six-album discography, including cover album The Spaghetti Incident, continues to sell well today and the band's classic line-up was introduced to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012 – their first year of eligibility. Moving past their well-documented troubles, the band made an impressive comeback back in 2016, with a once-in-a-lifetime headline slot at Coachella Festival.
