Goran Bregović is a fascinating musical phenomenon. He's not only a music icon in his native Bosnia-Herzegovina; he's also regarded as a one of the most important figures in the history of popular music in the former Yugoslavia. He writes and performs across a cross-section of genres, principally rock, jazz folk and world music. One of the most important figures in modern Balkan popular music

Goran Bregović has taken his unique brew of Balkan folk rock a long way; from the city of his birth, Sarajevo, to the most famous concert venues in the world, including the Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall. He played in two Yugoslavian rock bands when he first began: a cover band by the name of Kodeksi and an original band called Jutro. These two were the predecessors for his most famous band of the era, Bijelo Dugme, for whom he played lead guitar and wrote the songs. They've gone down in history as one of the most successful bands to emerge from Yugoslavia. Having conquered that peak, "Brega" as he is also known, embarked on a solo career, not as a rock artist, but as a composer of film scores. He struck up a partnership with Serbian director Emir Kusturica, and won a Golden Arena award at the Pula Film Festival for his score for "Time of the Gypsies". He went on to compose scores for a number of other movies, including Academy Award-nominated, "La Reine Margot". Eclectic and inventive world music

Goran Bregović has collaborated with many other Balkan artists as well, and his songwriting skills have been in high demand across the region. He's written and performed with well-known Polish singer-songwriter Kayah, which sold almost three-quarters of a million copies, as well as the Greek international star, George Dalaras. He's collaborated with Turkish pop singer Sezen Aksu too, writing music and lyrics for her 1997 album, "Wedding and Funeral" ("Düğün ve Cenaze"). He's also found fame as a composer of TV telenovela themes, and in 1998 formed the Wedding and Funeral Orchestra, a loose ensemble that includes a brass band, a string ensemble, traditional Roma singers and bagpipes.
