Officially known as the Kingdom of Bahrain, a small island nation lies between the Qatar peninsula and the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia, is linked by the King Fahd Causeway - a 16 mile stretch of road built to establish and improve bonds between the two countries. With a population of just 1.2 million people and a tiny 295.5 square miles in size, Bahrain is the third smallest nation in Asia behind Maldives and Singapore. After fighting off competition to stage an F1 race from Lebanon, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, the first race was held during the 2004 season at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir. Initially won by the legendary Michael Schumacher, fellow German Sebastian Vettel followed and became the most successful racer here, with four wins as of 2018. Honoring a racing legend

In 2006, the Bahrain GP kicked off the season for the first time. Usually held by the Australia Grand Prix, which was pushed back to avoid a clash with that year's Commonwealth Games, the opening race saw a circuit re-configuration, increasing the lap length to become an "Endurance Circuit" layout in order to celebrate the F1's diamond jubilee. In the following years, however, it was reverted back to its original layout. In 2014, organisers announced a decision to name the first corner of the track after Michael Schumacher, in honor of the seven-time world champion and three-time British Grand Prix winner.
