Fat Freddy's Drop: iconic Kiwi act

Originally hailing from Wellington, the group were brought together by founder Chris 'Mu' Faiumu and soon began performing at local clubs and festivals. Steadily gaining notoriety for the intensity of their live shows, the band brought out Live at the Matterhorn in 2001, a fantastic recording of a raucous show in their hometown. They spent the next few years refining their show, and only released debut studio album Based on a True Story in 2005.

The LP proved a huge hit, going platinum nine times in New Zealand alone, and making a big impact internationally. Early success came in the UK, with listeners of Gilles Peterson's BBC Worldwide programme loving the record so much they voted it their 2005 Album of the Year. The band's debut showed remarkable longevity in New Zealand, remaining in the top 40 for two years after its initial release.
