Paul McCartney Biography - From Beatlemania to MBE
Hailing from Liverpool, this iconic performer was encouraged in his musical pursuits by his father from an early age, quickly picking up the piano and later cheekily trading a trumpet his from his parents for an acoustic guitar after becoming influenced by rock and roll. Incredibly, as a teenager the singer was already composing what would become some of the Beatles' biggest singles including 'When I'm Sixty-Four'.
McCartney was just 15 years old when he met John Lennon (then a member of the Quarrymen) and joined the performer as a rhythm guitarist. The group recruited George Harrison and went through a number of name changes before settling on their now famous moniker. After completing their line-up with the addition of Ringo Starr, the band scored their first hit with 'Love Me Do', trigging a wave of "Beatlemania" that would carry on for the next decade. During this time McCartney came into his own as a songwriter, creating timeless hits like haunting balled and phenomenally successful single 'Yesterday'. The band continued to experiment and move with the times, producing pioneering works like Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band- widely believed to be rock's first concept album.
Since the Beatles' dissolution at the end of the 60s, McCartney has gone on to be hailed as the most successful songwriter in music history, with 60 gold discs and 91 Top 10 singles to his name. The star continues to adapt with the times, proving his decade-spanning appeal more recently with a collaboration with Rihanna and Kanye West on single 'FourFiveSeconds'.
Winner of the coveted Gershwin Prize and the BRIT Award for Outstanding Contributions to Music, it's no surprised that Sir Paul McCartney continues to fill arenas across the world with fans still in the grip of Beatlemania.
