Eliades Ochoa Biography - Keeping Cuban Music Alive
Born in 1946 to a musical family, the young Cuban followed in his parents' footsteps by taking up music at just six years old and began performing in the streets to raise money for his family just a couple of years later. During his time as a professional musician for a Santiago radio show, the instrumentalist became experienced in both his guitar playing and singing abilities, with his unique harmonic-guitar becoming a trademark sound. It wasn't long along until he was approached to take over long-running group Cuarteto Patria, modernising their sound with the addition of brass and percussion and garnering the musician international fame.
Buena Vista Social Club proved to be one of the singer's biggest successes, with their album 'El Carretero' earning the group a Grammy and selling over 8 million copies - making it the most successful world music album of all time. Regardless of his age, the cowboy hat wearing musician continues to tour around the world - having performed in over 40 countries during his lifetime - and still puts on a roof-raising authentically Cuban show.
