Get Down with Dirty Heads

Hailing from Huntington Beach, California, Dirty Heads are at the head of their game. Their music spans a number of genres, from ska punk to hip hop and reggae, but it's safe to say that they're heavily influenced by the original lineup of Sublime. Dirty Heads don't make it over to this side of the pond very often, so when they do you should try to make the time to see them live. Though their UK appearances are rare, you can catch them at The Barfly in Camden, London, and they have a handful of European dates in the works, including Paris, France at Les Etoiles, Berlin, Germany at Bi Nuu and Amsterdam, Netherlands at High Times Cannabis Cup.

Trivia

The band's name comes from the fact that their family members used to tease them and call them "dirty heads" when they were young. The song "Spread Too Thin" was inspired by something that the band's vocalist, Jared Watson's, dad said to him: "You're like a little bit of butter on too much bread."

Band

Originally formed in 1996, the band just played for fun at first. It wasn't until Dirty Heads switched around their lineup in 2003 that they started to get serious. The band still consists of those same members: Jared "Dirty J" Watson is the vocalist, Dustin "Buddy D" Bushnell is the guitarist and backing vocalist, Jon Olazabal is the percussionist, Matt Ochoa is the drummer and David Foral is the bassist. The band was signed to major label Warner Bros., but they scrapped their contract due to artistic differences. Luckily, they retained the rights to the unreleased music they'd recorded while signed to Warner, and much of this made up their debut album.

Breakthrough

Seeing as Dirty Heads have been together for a long time, it's no secret that it's been a steady rise to fame for them, rather than a sudden breakthrough. Due to their committed touring schedule, they were already fairly well known before they signed to a record label, and, although they broke off their deal with Warner, they still managed to get signed to Executive Music Group and then to Five Seven Music. Opening for bands such as Sublime with Rome, Pepper, 311 and Kottonmouth Kings gained them even more fans and admirers. However, it might be fair to say that their primary breakthrough into the mainstream was with the single "Lay Me Down," which reached the number 1 spot in the United States, on both the rock and alternative charts.

Hit Albums

All of Dirty Heads' albums have been hits to some extent. Their debut, Any Port in a Storm, reached number 55 on the Billboard 200, number 7 in the US alternative charts and number 16 on the US rock charts, which is certainly an achievement for a first album. Their second album, Cabin by the Sea, did even better: It hit the Billboard 200's number 18 spot and charted at number 4 and number 6 on the US alternative and rock charts, respectively. However, perhaps their biggest hit, both critically and commercially, is Sound of Change. This release got to number 8 on the Billboard 200, number 1 in the US alternative charts and number 2 in the US rock charts.

Audiences tend to stand at Dirty Heads' shows and, depending on the type of song, there will definitely be some moshing or dancing.
