Cypress Hill - Latin Rap Legends Still Going Strong
Named after a street in South Gate, this notorious hip hop group have come a long way since their formation in 1988. Although their maverick live performances culminated a cult fan base in their early days, it was their sophomore album Black Sunday that made them a sensation on both sides of the Atlantic in 1993.
Inspired by a plethora of influences including Black Sabbath (you can see Ozzy's band incarnated in the album artwork), the record soared to number one on the Billboard 200 chart and spawned classic hip hop hits such as 'Insane in the Brain' and 'I Wanna Get High'. Achieving their unique sound by contrasting Sen Dog's strong vocals with B-Real's exaggerated high pitched nasal tone, the songs from the seminal album inspired collaborations with a string of alternative bands including Linkin Park and System of a Down. Seamlessly combining both Spanish and English lyrics, their songs expertly weave a myriad of cultures. As the first Latin American rappers to achieve multi-platinum album sales, the boys have opened the doors for a lot of Cuban musicians.
