Clutch Biography - Anvil-Heavy Cult Rockers

Formed in Germantown in the US state of Maryland, bassist Dan Maines, drummer Jean Paul Gaster, guitarist Tim Sult and singer Roger Smalls - later replaced by Neil Fallon - got together in 1990 to form what would go on to become one of the great cult rock acts of our time. Their debut album Transnational Speedway League came out in 1993, laying down their unique template of funk-infused sludge-rock that would be copied by many, but perfected by few over the following years.

It wasn't until a decade later, however, that they would make a mainstream breakthrough and enjoy chart success. Having signed to the Atlantic record label, their song 'Careful With That Mic' became a surprise hit single and paved the way for their 2004 album Blast Tyrant to enjoy similar success. By this point they were the cream of the influential stoner rock movement in the US, but few would have predicted that Earth Rocker, the album they released in 2013, would be their most successful.
