Bring Me the Horizon Biography - Sheffield Band Embrace a New Sound with That's the Spirit
Formed in Sheffield, singer Oliver Sykes, Lee Malia, Curtis Ward, Matt Kean and Matt Nicholls took their name from a line at the end of blockbuster movie Pirates of the Caribbean. Bonding over their love for punk and death metal, they slotted perfectly into the emo trend dominating the mid '00s and released first full length LP Count Your Blessings in 2006 after signing with label Visible Noise. Fans soon called for more, and they returned to the studio to work on sophomore effort Suicide Season. Coming back with a reinvented sound, their popularity exploded, leading to exposure in the US and slots on both the Kerrang! and Warped tours.
After replacing Ward with I Killed the Prom Queen member Jona Weinhofen, the band moved on to third album There is a Hell, Believe Me I've Seen It, There is a Heaven, Let's Keep it a Secret, finding a top 20 breakthrough in the UK album charts. Sempiternal dropped in 2013 and saw the band move in a slightly lighter direction, and the evolution was confirmed with concept album That's the Spirit two years later. Dropping some of their metalcore elements in favour of a more melodic, alt-rock approach, the LP proved their most popular to date, shooting straight to the top of the charts.
