Black Grape - Shaun Ryder's 1990s Boys Bounce Back

When the Happy Mondays split up in 1992, frontman and vocalist Shaun Ryder vowed to form an entirely different outfit as a vehicle for his musical creativity. With a little help from his former bandmate Bez and rappers Kermit and Jed from the Ruthless Rap Assassins, Ryder continued to lead the way for the decade's wave of alternative dance bands.

After years out of the limelight, the band teamed up with Goldie and DJ Paul Oakenfold to release 'We Are England', the England football team's official anthem for their 2016 summer international adventure, before announcing a tour. Madchester and Britpop lynchpins the Happy Mondays enjoyed a huge wave of success in 1990, going on to influence a whole new generation of musicians with their rave revolution album Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, produced by DJ Paul Oakenfold. With tracks like the seminal 'Step On' and irresistibly danceable 'Kinky Afro' in their arsenal, the band swiftly garnered cult appeal - but by 1992 their praised profile had just as swiftly come unstuck. In-band disagreements and personal difficulties led to a decline in popularity, and the Happy Mondays separated acrimoniously.

Anyone would be forgiven for thinking that the end of the band would signal the end of Shaun Ryder's career, but against all odds, the Mancunian frontman decided to form a new outfit pretty much the next day. Recording demos mere weeks after the 'Step On' singers parted ways, the band were fully embraced by the British public and press, with their debut album It's Great When You're Straight... Yeah soaring straight to number one, spawning hits such as 'Reverend Black Grape'. After enjoying varying degrees of success over the years, the band are back in 2016 with the England anthem under the guise of 4 Lions, along with their pal Paul Oakenfold and dodgy geezer Goldie.
