Schedule
Bell X1 regularly performs in their native Ireland at venues like the Olympia and Croke Park in Dublin. They also perform in continental Europe and the United States. In the U.K., they can be found in venues like Derry's Guildhall and London's Union Chapel.
Trivia
Before forming Bell X1, several members were part of the band Juniper, including Damien Rice as lead. Juniper released the EP "Manna" and the singles 'Weatherman and 'World is Dead,' and then signed a deal with Polygram Ireland in 1997. However, things went sour for the band, and Damien Rice ended up leaving and building a solo career. After a short break, the remaining members of Juniper formed Bell X1.
Band
Bell X1 was formed in 1999 by Paul Noonan Brian Crosby, Dominic Philips and David Geraghty. The band released its debut record, "Neither Am I" in 2000 on Universal, produced by Nick Seymour of the band Crowded House. Unfortunately, it failed to capture the imaginations of critics or record buyers, and was not released outside Ireland. The band continued performing live, and their top-notch performances improved their low reputation. The band found greater success with their next two albums, "Music and Mouth" (2004) and "Flock" (2008). Stardom outside of Ireland began when Bell X1 started to attract an American following with their 2009 album "Blue Lights on the Runway," which included singles like 'The Great Defector'. It broke the Top 20 on Billboard's Heartseekers Chart. Around this time, Brian Crosby left the band, and Bell X1 continues with three members.
Breakthrough
Bell X1's second album was their first brush with commercial and critical success. "Music in Mouth" was released in 2004 on Island Records, and achieved double-platinum status in Ireland. The touching single "Eve, the Apple of my Eye" attracted international attention for Bell X1 when it was featured on the US TV show "The O.C." The Sunday Tribune listed the single as one of their Top 50 Irish Songs of All Time.
Hit Albums
Bell X1 rode the wave of success that followed "Music in Mouth" by recording the album "Flock" with producer Roger Bechirian. The record was released in 2008 and it reached No. 1 on the Irish charts in its first week. It also achieved five-times platinum status. The anthem 'Flame' was one of the more notable singles on the album, exhibiting an energetic mix of pop and rock with clever but catchy lyrics. The success of this album led to European tours and headline festival gigs in Ireland. In 2009, Bell X1 released "Blue Lights on the Runway," their fourth studio album. It was a hit with Irish critics and the public, reaching number one on the Irish Albums Chart. Recent albums "Bloodless Coup" and "Chop Chop" have also been well received.
Show Experience
Bell X1 shows generally have a laid-back feel. They keep things simple on stage, avoiding overly theatrical antics and instead concentrating on producing great music with energy and heart. Even in large venues, they manage to create the feeling of an intimate experience. Most of their shows take place at standing venues like rock clubs, but they sometimes play seated venues like concert halls.
