California-based rock act Avenged Sevenfold took on the world in the early noughties with their aggressive blend of hard rock, punk and metal; and the group are still going strong a decade and a half later. Lead by the great M. Shadows, the band will follow up last year's massive UK tour with a Belfast date and a headline slot at Download Festival in 2018; alongside rock legends Guns N' Roses and Ozzy Osbourne.

Avenged Sevenfold: almost 20 years in the business for one of metal's finest groups

Avenged Sevenfold first breathed life in 1999 in Huntington Beach, with the line-up including singer M. Shadows, guitarist Zacky Vengeance, drummer James 'The Rev' Sullivan and bass maestro Matt Wendt. 2001 debut Sounding The Seventh Trumpet firmly established the band's place in the metalcore scene, and they've barely looked back since. Invigorated by the arrival of a new bassist Johnny Christ, their sophomore record Waking the Fallen went certified gold and caught the attention of Warner Records – who helped to transport them to the mainstream.

The group steadily built their reputation through a series of high-profile gigs such as Ozzfest, but tragedy struck in 2009 as drummer, songwriter and composer Sullivan, died from an overdose. After carefully considering their future, the band soldiered on to release Nightmare which spawned the fan favourite single of the same name. 2013's Hail To The King and The Stage (2016) have both been huge critical and commerical successes, as the band continue to go from strength to strength.
