Alabama Shakes - From Obscurity to Critical Acclaim
Reviving the sounds of mid-20th century rhythm and blues, this Grammy Award nominated band, best known for hit singles like 'Hold On', rose from complete obscurity to be one of the most unique and popular bands on the circuit with their distinctive sound. Their new album Sound & Colour draws upon multiple influences, including singer Brittany Howard's favourite artists like Led Zeppelin and David Bowie, along with soul legends Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding. Alabama Shakes - A Bit of Background
Brittany Howard grew up fascinated by music, teaching herself to play multiple instruments whilst still at school. It was at school she met fellow bandmate Zac Cockrell, shortly followed by drummer Steve Johnson, who then began to record their first tracks in the singer's grandparents' home. Gigging across their local area in the evenings, the band started to be noticed by music bloggers for their unique, stand-out sound. After blogger Justin Gage posted an MP3 of their song 'You Ain't Alone', the band were awash with interest from record labels.
Eventually signing with ATO Records, the group's debut album Boys & Girls was released in 2012, receiving universal acclaim, with single 'Hold On' dubbed by Rolling Stone magazine as the best song of the year. Three nominations followed at the 2013 Grammy Awards, with the album going Gold by March. After spending over a year back in the studio, the band's second album Sound & Colour was released in April 2015, debuting at number one on the US Billboard charts.
