It was a chance meeting at a house party in Peckham that drew Jake Black and Rob Spragg (aka Larry Love and the Very Reverend Dr. D Wayne) to the conclusion that a strange splicing of genres could work, and that they were the ones who should try it. The group accumulated more members along the way and overcame accusations that they were simply a novelty act to sign to One Little Indian Records in 1997.

Following the release of their debut album, Exile on Coldharbour Lane, the group rose to international fame when single 'Woke Up This Morning' was adopted as the opening theme to HBO's acclaimed gangster series.
