From rags to riches

Initially founded as Boscombe F.C around the turn of the 20th century, the club first played in the Football League as a Third Division South side in 1920, before becoming 'Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic F.C. Then, in 1972, the club was given its present name, and adopted red and black stripes in the hope that they could emulate the achievements of Italian giants AC Milan. It was not to be, with the club staying in the third tier of English football for much of the next three decades. In 2008, the situation became critical, with the club going into administration, suffering relegation to the fourth tier and a 17-point deduction for the 2008/09 season. Another relegation could have ended the club's very existence, but Eddie Howe was appointed manager that season, and steered the club to safety on the final day. After a consortium bought out the club in 2009, there was no looking back. Under Howe, AFC Bournemouth rose through the divisions, gaining promotion just six years later.
