Rising from the ashes of Illinois alt country pioneers Uncle Tupelo, frontman Jeff Tweedy was able to keep all the members of the band except songwriter Jay Farrar, and decided to rename the band after the abbreviation for 'will comply' (because they sought to do anything but). Their 1995 debut album A.M. closely followed the work of the old group, but their sophomore effort Being There (named after the Peter Sellers film) marked a radical change in style and sound. Unexpected flourished of power pop, psychedelia and soul earned the band critical acclaim, leading to a collaboration with English singer songwriter Billy Bragg.

Despite line-up changes and creative frustrations, the group spawned a series of landmark albums throughout the 2000s. Their fourth LP Yankee Hotel Foxtrot sold over 500,000 copies and is counted as one of the greatest records of the decade, with tracks like 'Jesus, Etc.' helping to earn the band a place among Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Packed with '60s style pop ballads with streaks of Crazy Horse, their fifth effort A Ghost Is Born won them a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. 'Spiders' and 'At Least That's What You Said' are noted for their illuminating lyrics, showcasing the depth of Tweedy's songwriting.
