Who are the Washington Nationals?

The Washington Nationals were established in 1969 as the Montreal Expos. They were the first team in Major League Baseball to be based outside of the US. In 2005, they were renamed and moved to Washington, DC, the capital of The United States of America. That’s not to be confused with Washington state, which is on the west coast! DC stands for District of Columbia, and is located near Virginia and Maryland. As such, the Washington Nationals compete in the East division of the National League. The first years of their history in MLB were not that successful. However, from the 10s onwards, all that began to change. Their first division win came in 2012, with the Atlanta Braves trailing second. They repeated their win in 2014, 2016 and 2017, outperforming teams like  the New York Mets and the Miami Marlins, but failing to advance to the National League and World Series championships.
