The Victoria Palace Theatre is situated in the West End, at Victoria Street, opposite London’s Victoria Station. Immersed in London’s history

Opening its doors in 1911, the theatre started as a small concert room near the stables of the Royal Standard Hotel, which was built in 1832 as a small hotel and tavern. In 1850, the venue became known as Moy’s Musical Hall and in 1863 it was taken over by Alfred Brown, refurbished and renamed the Royal Standard Music Hall. In 1886 the area saw much re-development and the theatre was demolished, however its owner, Thomas Dickey, commissioned it to be re-built by Richard Wake and it retained its original name, the Royal Standard Music Hall. Another demolition occurred in 1910 and, at the cost of £12,000, the Victoria Palace Theatre was built by renowned theatre architect Frank Matcham, opening its doors to audiences on 6th November 1911. Continuing the musical theatre tradition under the creative Alfred Butt, the Victoria Palace theatre presented mostly varieties, followed by revues and repertory. Following a momentary lack of success from its production of ‘Young England’, the theatre returned to revues and achieved triumph from its original production of ‘Me and My Girl’, which opened in 1937 and starred Lupino Lane. Prominent performers and some of London's most celebrated plays

It was in 1939 that songs from this celebrated show resulted in the first live broadcast of a performance by the UK’s BBC. Following this, under the direction of Lupino Lane, the theatre presented variety and included prominent performers including Will Hay from his radio series, along with Charles Hawtrey, John Clark, comedian and comic acrobat duo Stainless Stephen, and world champion table tennis player, Victor Barna. This was followed by productions of ‘The Crazy Gang’, ‘Black and White Minstrel Show’ and ‘The Little Foxes’ with Elizabeth Taylor making her debut on London’s stage. ‘Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story’ was known for its long-running time on stage and following its 13 years of performance, the theatre presented famous musicals including ‘Billy Elliot the Musical’ in 2005.
