Starting out as an Expos affiliate
To familiarise yourself with the Vermont Lake Monsters means to be introduced to its mascot, Champ, a kind of friendly, green Loch Ness Monster, named after the legendary Lake Champlain monster from the region. The team wasn't always based in the US; they initially started out as an affiliate of the Montreal Expos, and then became the Washington Nationals. They ended up affiliated to the Canadian team in 1994 because it was the closest franchise to the city—otherwise they may have ended up as part of the Boston Red Sox system, given that this was the next closest professional ball-team. During this initial era the team reached the playoffs twice in consecutive years, losing in the finals to Watertown in 1995 but winning the championship the following year by beating St. Catharines. If you're a baseball fan keen on getting up close with a farm system team, go get yourself some Vermont Lake Monsters tickets on StubHub. It's an excellent chance to get in touch with the real spirit of America's national pastime.
Joining the change to the Nationals
The Vermont Lake Monsters have always been based at the home ground, Centennial Field Vermont, which is on the campus of the University of Vermont. They stayed here even when the Expos moved south and became the Washington Nationals, resurrecting an old and proud name in American baseball history. They remained with the franchise for five years, before being sold to the Oakland A's. The playoff action resumed in the very first year with their new organisation, but they didn't make it past the semi-finals. In 2017 they redeemed themselves somewhat, advancing all the way to the finals, where they lost to Hudson Valley Renegades. Vermont Lake Monsters tickets are available on StubHub throughout the US baseball season, which starts in April each year. They have tended to play in the Short-Season A division most often, which doesn't last as long as the regular season, so check our listings for exact details.
