In the WTA series, things proved just as exciting with Karolina Pliskova defeating firm US favourite Serena William, in the semifinals leading to a close battle between Pliskova and German star Angelique Kerber. Kerber's determination in the third set saw to her finally winning the cup, with the match infused with emotion throughout.

The US Open can actually span back as far as 1881, although admittedly, as per the era, the tournament's events were men's only. Fortunately, only 6 years later did the tournament become one of the first tournaments to hold a women's singles tournament, alongside the men's singles tournament, a very progressive move for the organisation at the time. Considering the first female champion, Ellen Hansel, won at the impressive age of 17, the tournament has long since been a place of inspiration and dreams for hopeful tennis professionals. Some of the biggest names in tennis have made their names legendary at the US Open, including the likes of Margaret Court, Bob Bryan, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras and Serena Williams!
