Originally opening as a grand cinema in 1933, this opulent picture house was built to impress, seating 3,520 people at any one time. Bringing some Hollywood glamour to Commercial Road, visitors would enter through a glow of lights into a foyer with chandeliers, floor to ceiling mirrors and a sweeping staircase. As a premier local nightspot up until the 1960s, silver screen legends such as Gracie Fields and Clark Gable graced the hotspot with their presence. Hit by wartime damage, the venue was forced to close in 1960, with 'The Siege of Sydney Street' being the last screening before the doors closed to the public.

Since functioning as a cinema, its doors have also opened to singers from the London Opera Centre along with hoards of gamblers, who played there until Mecca Bingo relinquished their ownership in 2006. Excitingly, the premises are well on the way to being restored to their original finery, with their upcoming calendar boasting everything from cinema parties and cabaret performances to intimate indie gigs.
