Since first appearing on the music scene in the late 1990s, Thea Gilmore has emerged as one of the UK's top female singer/songwriters of her generation. While her pure, lyrical voice recalls iconic folk singers such as Sandy Denny and Joni Mitchell, her songs are refreshingly contemporary, with universal themes that resonate with today's audiences.

Trivia
When Thea Gilmore was 15, she began writing poetry as a way of helping her deal with the trauma of her parents' divorce. This early work helped her to later hone her songwriting skills.
Singer
As a young girl growing up in Oxfordshire, Thea Gilmore fell in love with music through listening to her father's record collection. Influenced by the music of The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello and Tom Waits, she began performing herself at a young age. In 1998 while still a teenager, she released her first album, "Burning Dorothy," which received widespread airplay throughout the UK. Over the next several years, she honed her craft by performing with the folk/soul group Reed and Soul Association. After the release of her 2003 mega-success "Avalanche," Gilmore began touring extensively, returning to the studio in 2006 to record another breakaway album, "Harpo's Ghost." Named by Uncut magazine as the best British singer/songwriter of the decade, Gilmore regularly performs throughout Europe, the US and the UK. In addition, she continues to go from strength to strength as a recording artist, with albums that have garnered her an avid international following. During the last several years, Gilmore has also become closely associated with the music of the legendary folk singer Sandy Denny, after executors for Denny's estate chose her to compose the music for a number of unpublished lyrics by Denny that were recently discovered.
Breakthrough
Thea Gilmore's breakthrough came with the release of her 2003 album "Avalanche," which peaked at #62 on the Official UK Album Chart. The album also featured two hit singles, "Mainstream" and "Juliet." The success of "Avalanche" led to exposure on the BBC's Top of the Pops 2 show, and led to an invitation to tour as the opening act for Joan Baez in 2004. Gilmore's tour with Baez not only gave her more exposure in the UK and Europe, but also helped her to win new audiences in the US.
Hit Albums
After "Avalanche," Thea Gilmore had another major success with "Harpo's Ghost" (2006), which featured the hit single, "Cheap Tricks." In 2011, Gilmore received widespread acclaim throughout the UK for her album "Don't Stop Singing," which featured her own original melodies written to unpublished lyrics written by the late folk rock singer Sandy Denny. Gilmore also performs as a guest artist on other albums, and made a notable contribution to Martin Harley's "Drumrolls for Sommersaults" album in 2010.
Show Experience
A Thea Gilmore concert has all the intimacy of a sixties folk concert in a dark, smoky coffeehouse. She creates an immediate, intense, emotional bond with her audience from the outset, leaving them captivated. There's plenty of banter and audience interaction between songs with her fans, but a Thea Gilmore concert is primarily about the songs, the music and its heartfelt messages. There aren't any special lighting effects -- mainly just a single bright spotlight on the singer -- but audiences stay spellbound by the power of her voice. Rather than a get-up-and-dance atmosphere, a Thea Gilmore concert is a mesmerising musical experience, where audiences can sit back, relax, and revel in the beauty of her voice, and the profundity and power of her songs.
