Based on a film that was based on a fairy tale, "The Red Shoes" is a story that has certainly managed to stand the test of time. Most recently, it's been made into a brand-new musical ballet by acclaimed choreographer Sir Matthew Bourne. If you're excited to see the newest interpretation of this classic story, be sure to get "The Red Shoes" tickets soon.
The Original Inspiration
The origin of "The Red Shoes" comes from Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, who also wrote "The Little Mermaid" and "The Snow Queen". In the original fairy tale, a young peasant girl receives a gorgeous pair of red shoes from her wealthy adoptive mother after the death of her parents. She becomes so obsessed with her new shoes that she even wears them to church, a controversial move in 19th-century Denmark. Karen can't resist dancing in her red shoes and eventually finds that she can't stop, so she dances and dances day after day until she eventually asks someone to cut the shoes off. And after this grisly deed is done, the shoes just keep on dancing with Karen's feet still tucked inside them.
The Hollywood Movie
The new musical references the original fairy tale but takes much more inspiration from the 1948 Powell and Pressburger film of the same name, which stars Moira Shearer as a young dancer playing the lead role in "The Red Shoes" ballet. The Academy Award-winning film is not quite as grisly as the original story but just as enthralling -- revealing any more will spoil the plot of the new musical version.
The newest take on "The Red Shoes" was produced by Matthew Bourne, who has already proven his musical chops with numerous award-winning shows, including "Sleeping Beauty" and "Swan Lake". The star of "The Red Shoes" ballet is Ashley Shaw, who wowed audiences when she played Aurora in Matthew Bourne's previous production of "Sleeping Beauty". The musical score was arranged by visionary composer Terry Davies, who was greatly inspired by one the most beloved composers of Hollywood's golden age, Bernard Herrmann.
