Hailed as "the new pop extravaganza," the Mighty Hoopla is London's newest festival craze. Hosted by a variety of local night clubs, the Mighty Hoopla is a vibrant, energetic, LGBT-friendly "celebration of alternative club culture" that brings together both old and new acts in the pop genre in one day-long festival full of music and fun. Based in London's Victoria Park, this all-day celebration features some of pop's most exciting acts, dancers, DJs and speciality performers galore. Organised by prominent local clubs Sink the Pink and Guilty Pleasures, the Mighty Hoopla will, as the website puts it, have you "picking glitter out of your hair for weeks."

The Mighty Hoopla's background

The Mighty Hoopla first hit the London festival scene in 2017, styling itself as an ultra-inclusive, energetic celebration of pop, love, diversity, youth, freedom and life in general. The festival sets up shop in London's expansive Victoria Park, spreading across three main stages. One stage is run by Sink the Pink, one is run by Guilty Pleasures and the last is run by The Grand.

The Mighty Hoopla also features a vast variety of food and drink vendors, craft ales from the London Brewers' Market, game tents and more. The event is designed to provide concert goers with everything they might need during the day, as no re-entry is permitted once patrons have arrived on the premises.

The Mighty Hoopla's first year

With the Mighty Hoopla's inaugural festival scheduled for Sunday, June 4, 2017, many expectant concert-goers were jarred by the London Bridge bombings that took place on the eve of the festival. Seven were killed in the tragic terrorist attack. After such sobering news, it was difficult to imagine how anyone could manage to enjoy an all-day festival with a predominant message of upbeat positivity. However, after receiving the go-ahead from the Metropolitan Police, the festival proceeded as scheduled and ticket-holders came out to celebrate with a certain brand of defiance that only served to further the aims of the festival by highlighting its message of love and inclusiveness more than ever.

Between 12 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., pop fans cavorted around Victoria Park, enjoying the musical talents of a lineup that included names such as All Saints, Charlotte Church, Will Young, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Fleur East and S Club Party (comprised of the three remaining members of former teen pop group S Club 7). The electrifying performances put on by these beloved performers added to an atmosphere that was all around upbeat, joyful and welcoming, rendering the Mighty Hoopla a rousing success despite the sad events of the night before.
