The Queen of the Night

Consisting of both spoken word dialogue and singing, "The Magic Flute" opened at Vienna's Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden in 1791. Its story sees The Queen of the Night's attempt to save her daughter Pamina from captivity backfire when the prince tasked with the rescue mission also ends up falling under the spell of high priest Sarastro. Featuring a libretto from German impresario Emanuel Schikaneder, "The Magic Flute" also boasts some of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's most popular arias, including "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen", "O zittre nicht, mein lieber Sohn" and "Dies Bildnis ist bezaubernd schön". The two-act opera became an instant success on its late 18th Century premiere and has since inspired a whole host of film adaptations, books, pieces of art and stage productions. Paul Wranitzky and Peter von Winter both later composed their own sequels, while in 1938, the Berlin Philharmonic released the first official studio recording.
