The Dualers and Their Dedication to Ska

Ska and reggae really hit their pop-culture stride from the late 1990's through the early 2000's, as a number of bands topped the charts with a series of fast-paced, upbeat hits that were fun to dance to in just about any concert setting. Known as the third wave, this produced the likes of popular festival bands like The Cherry Poppin Daddies, Less Than Jake, and Reel Big Fish. One of these big band groups was The Dualers out of the South London area of Croydon, who have cemented themselves as one of the better Ska and Reggae acts still actively touring today.

Schedule

The band began as buskers on the streets of London and gained a reputation for continuing to perform on the streets long after they had had reached success as a professional band. Performing live is something The Dualers pride themselves on. In addition to their street performances, to cap off the year, the band will be playing in the likes of the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, the Skamouth Festival in Great Yarmouth and Kingsmeadow, where dancing will be at a premium.

Trivia

After their hit "Truly Madly Deeply" in 2005, which rose to No. 23 on the charts in the U.K., the track was included on the soundtrack for the romantic comedy "Fool's Gold," starring Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey.

Band/Artist

Influenced by their father Bill Cranstoun, a DJ who helped to pioneer the genre of ska in the 1960's, brothers Tyber and Si Cranstoun formed The Dualers in 1999. They started out by playing on the streets around London, or really wherever they could, building a strong grassroots following that ultimately led to professional gigs. The band currently has nine members and despite the fact that Si Cranstoun left the band in 2010 to pursue his own solo career, The Dualers still tour, gig on the street and record new music regularly.

Breakthrough

As their popularity grew in the early 2000's, The Dualers played alongside some of the biggest names in the Ska game, from the Skatalites to Toots and the Maytals to Jimmy Cliff and UB40. In late 2004 their debut single "Kiss of the Lips" entered the U.K. singles chart at No. 21, solidifying their status as a great live act and one that could also make an impression on the commercial music marketplace.

Hit Albums

It wasn't until seven years after they first came together as a band that The Dualers even released their first album The Melting Pot, which debuted their third single "Don't Go." It charted at No. 61 in the U.K. The quality of their live shows had carried the band for nearly a decade, keeping their need for producing albums within a studio to a minimum. In fact, the majority of The Dualers albums to date have been from live performances, rather than original studio albums, proving that hearing and seeing them in the flesh is preferential.
