A unique and timely play
The Doctor is playwright Robert Icke’s modern adaption of the work "Professor Bernhardi" written by Arthur Schnitzler, which was first performed in 1912. Schnitzler was also the author of Traumnovelle, a book from which the experimental cult film Eyes Wide Shut starring Hollywood spouses Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise was adapted. As in the original work by Schnitzler, The Doctor tells the tale of a Jewish doctor who is vilified for refusing a dying patient to be given the last rites by a Catholic priest. Modern twists are introduced by Icke, which include the young girl dying from a self-administered abortion and sees the protagonist, Doctor Ruth Wolff specialising in Alzheimer’s disease. Ruth’s refusal to allow the priest access to the 14-year-old leads to viral and vitriolic social media outrage. The resulting fall out threatens not only the Doctor’s career, but the very institute she works for. Audiences can expect powerful, emotive performances from the lead actors, who immerse themselves in these impactful roles. Daring to go where others fear to tread, this is a unique and timely play, so buy or sell The Doctor tickets from StubHub.
The hope of British theatre pens another hit!
Fans of Jewish works may also enjoy tickets for comedy performances by the Godfathers of English stand-up Ben Elton, Alexei Sayle and David Baddiel. Music fans may be surprised to learn that pop’s iconic performer Pink joins the legendary Bob Dylan, singer Barbara Streisand and the late, great R‘n’B performer Amy Winehouse, with her Jewish heritage. Robert Icke has a fast-growing reputation for radical revivals of classic works and this production bears all the hallmarks we have come to expect from the English playwright. Considered to be "the hope" of British theatre, Icke’s talent lies in his radical adaptations of original works. His aim is to engage and introduce new and younger audiences to the theatre. He wants to brush off any preconceptions from previous portrayals and, in our modern world of disengagement, for his audiences to feel moved.
