The Black Angels sultry and head-spinning psychedelia
With their name deriving from 'The Black Angel's Death Song' by The Velvet Underground, the group channels an old-fashioned psychedelic sound that's inspired by '60s psych rock bands such as 13th Floor Elevators, the Doors and Jesus and Mary Chain and yet manages to create a sound that's all of its own. In 2008, their collaboration with UNKLE on With You in My Head was featured on smash hit album for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse album, which led to extensive exposure and their third album Phosphene Dream, released in 2010, became a runaway hit, coming in the Top 50 of the Billboard chart. In 2017, they released Death Song, which is ranked as one of their finest works, notable for its heavy, melancholic atmospheres. Texas psychedelic rock finds a new sound
Formed in 2004 and hailing from Austin, Texas, their debut EP was released in late 2005. In 2008, they performed as a backing band for the former frontman of 13th Floor Elevators, Roky Erickson, across the US and worked on a couple of tracks with UNKLE, which led to their widespread recognition. Not only have they released a succession of popular albums, but they also helped to organise the Texas music festival, Austin Psych Fest (which then became known as Reverberation) and worked on Britain's Fuzz Club Records split-single series, making the A side to Sonic Jesus' Lost Reprise B-side track, with their single, 'Molly Moves My Generation'.
