Stick In The Wheel rejuvenates indie folk
Shunning the orchestration of a typical folk band, British quintet Stick In The Wheel has instead focused on a more modern approach to the genre, incorporating socio-political themes with modern electronic beats to create a novel indie folk music palette, inviting all to partake of their colourful offerings. Blending traditional and original to critical success
Stick In The Wheel is an Essex band whose debut recording, a CD entitled ‘EP1', was a self-produced, independent release in 2013 of four songs including the track ‘Bows of London'. One year later, the band issued two additional works: an EP of more traditional songs titled ‘Cuts', which was a BBC Radio exclusive recording, and ‘Bones', another four track set that included ‘Bedlam', which won a nomination for Best Emerging Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Music Awards that year. In 2015, Stick In The Wheel presented its debut album ‘From Here', which represented a mixture of traditional and modern tunes like ‘Me N Becky' and ‘The Blacksmith' tinged with social commentary as only the best folk music can deliver. The album received much critical acclaim and was nominated for the Horizon Award for Best Group in addition to winning fRoots Critics Poll for Album of The Year. You may also enjoy the traditional sound of yMusic,a>, Jon Boden and Suzanne Vega. Stick In The Wheel tickets are available now for purchase or sale via StubHub.
Stick In The Wheel creates seminal sessions
Stick In The Wheel's next project was an ambitious one to say the least. Following up on their approach to ‘From Here', the group traversed the country recording intimate sessions intended to promote the best of the British folk music scene. The resultant album, ‘From Here: English Folk Field Recordings', was released in 2017 and partially funded by Arts Council England, featuring artists such as John Fitzpatrick, Eliza Carthy and the band Spiro and was widely hailed as a "major project of contemporary musicology". Then in 2018, the group issued ‘Follow Them True', yet another collection of original and traditional songs that cemented their reputation as one of the most prominent proponents of the genre. ‘White Copper Alley' and ‘Weaving Song' reveal stories of the poor working classes, while ‘Red Carnation' and the title track show how founders Nicola Kearey and Ian Carter and their band cleverly use electronic signatures to revolutionise the classical folk sound with an improvisational flair that critics and audiences find compelling.
