A classic rock group, the Steve Miller Band was founded in 1965 and scored numerous hits in the 1970s. The lineup has changed many times over the years, with the likes of Boz Scaggs, Lonnie Turner and Billy Peterson all being past members. However, Miller has been ever-present as a guitarist, songwriter and leader. The band's first retrospective, an album called Greatest Hits 1974–78, was released in 1978 and ended up selling in excess of 13 million copies.

The band has toured all over the world and released a total of 18 studio albums to date. On top of this, the Steve Miller Band is responsible for six live albums and a string of compilation albums. The band was awarded the Golden Note Award by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, in 2008. Steve Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

The Steve Miller Band history

Steve Miller had been playing rock and blues in Chicago in the mid-1960s, before quitting to enter into the emerging psychedelic music scene in San Francisco. There, he formed the Steve Miller Blues Band, an act that managed to get signed to Capitol Records. The group performed at the Magic Mountain Festival and the Monterey Pop Festival, and were subsequently joined by Miller's old school friend, Boz Scaggs.

In early 1968, the group recorded their debut album, entitled Children of the Future, at the Olympic studios in London. However, it was not until the follow-up album, which featured a more distinct psychedelic bluesy rock sound, that the band had a hit on their hands. Sailor, released in 1968, got to number 24 in the US Billboard charts. Brave new World came out the following year. It also charted well, peaking at number 24. Also recorded in London, the drum, bass and guitar contribution for one song from this work was credited to Paul Ramon, an alias of Sir Paul McCartney of the Beatles.

By 1973, the Steve Miller Band was becoming less psychedelic and more radio-friendly for mainstream audiences. This is illustrated by The Joker, which was released that year. The album went platinum and the title song became a number one single on both sides of the Atlantic. The band continued to work in this vein for Fly Like an Eagle of 1976, which included a number of hit songs.

The Steve Miller Band continues to perform, notably with other rock bands such as Journey. The group is one of the foremost rock acts from the 1960s still to be performing. Steve Miller has been married four times.
