Stereo in Glasgow is a smallish, concentrated venue, which of course makes it the perfect kind of place for sweaty rock gigs, intimate folk performances and lots of bangin' house parties. It's an unassuming place, like so many of the best live venues have always been (you'd have struggled to notice the entrance to the legendary CBGB in New York, for instance). Inside you'll find welcoming wooden benches, with gig posters plastered along the walls. It has a vaguely seedy air, as it should, yet the outward appearance belies a superb kitchen and an excellent sound system. In short, it's perfect. DJs provide the soundtrack on nights when there's no live band or special house event, playing a well-chosen mix of R&B, soul, electro, funk and indie. The themed party nights have always been hugely popular since the venue opened its doors, with regular DJ crews taking over once or twice each week. Some of the most successful nights have been Blank Space, featuring artists like Zeki, Patrick Zella, 2000 AD and LOZ; and Fast MuzikMuzik, showcasing the likes of Boosterhooch and Roo Honeychild. On the other hand, there's also plenty of indie rock and pop to be had at Stereo in Glasgow. Live gigs are just as plentiful here as are house parties. The deliciously decadent Twin Temple have brought their tongue-in-cheek so-called "Satanic doo-wop" here and thoroughly entertained audiences with their campily gothic, yet utterly authentic, early-Sixties rhythm and blues.
