New city - new stadium

In the 1960s, it was decided by the British government that an additional generation of what was termed "new towns" was necessary in the south east of the country to relieve the congested housing market in London. Studies revealed the north of Buckinghamshire as a possible site for a "new town". It was to be the biggest yet (informally referred to as a "new city"), with a projected population of a quarter of a million people. The name Milton Keynes was taken from an existing village situated in the designated area and expansion began, eventually becoming the prosperous city it is today. In these initial stages of Milton Keynes' designation as a "new town", the planning team developed a vision of a stadium capable of housing a top-flight football club. It took until the turn of the millennium for the first proposal of what would become Stadium MK to go through, led by property development and construction mogul Pete Winkleman, who saw potential for a football frenzy in the new city despite criticism that audiences weren't interested in the sport outside of the Premier League. A sporting arena in high demand

In 2004, it was announced that south London club Wimbledon FC would be relocated to Milton Keynes to an unpopular response. The side was renamed MK Dons and began the 2004-05 season at the National Hockey Stadium until they moved to Stadium MK for the 2007-08 season. Under Paul Ince, Manchester Utd legend and the first black player to captain the England football team, MK Dons won the league two title that year, gaining promotion to league one. With a capacity of 30,500, Stadium MK has attracted other sports to host its events, primarily rugby. In 2011, the European cup quarter-final was held at Stadium MK between the Northampton Saints and Ulster, and in 2015, it was announced as a venue for the world cup, hosting three fixtures.
