The San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres were founded in 1969 in San Diego, California. Their name originates from the Spanish for father, referring to the Franciscan friars who, in 1769, founded the city of San Diego. Also known as "The Friars" or "The Pads", they compete in the National League and won in 1984 and 1998, advancing to the World Series but losing to the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees, respectively. The San Diego Padres have elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame players and managers alike. Some memorable names are Roberto "Robbie" Alomar, Rollie Fingers, Tony Gwinn (also known as Mr. Padre), Trevor Hoffman and Dave Winfield – the last three having their numbers retired by the team.
