Royal Philharmonic Orchestra History - Showcasing Some of the World's Best Musicians

The RPO first came to life in 1946, after renowned conductor Sir Thomas Beecham brought together some of the country's best musicians to pay homage to the classical greats. As resident at the Glyndebourne Festivals seasons, they began to grow in prestige and recruited high calibre members such as 'Conductor for Life' Rudolf Kempe. The early '50s saw their first performance at the Proms and a European tour which would take them from Paris to Vienna, before founder Beecham stepped down as conductor following health issues. Kempe took the helm and despite threats to their existence, the line-up went on to record beautiful renditions of Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress and Gilbert and Sullivan's operas in the years that followed.

By the mid '80s the group had founded their own record label, RPO Records - the first in the world to be owned by a symphony orchestra - and the decade saw chief conductors Walter Weller and Vladimir Ashkenazy lead the ensemble through regional touring programmes, as well as regular appearances at iconic venues like London's Royal Albert Hall. Today, performances at their home base of Cadogan Hall and other sites like the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall are conducted by a distinguished set of musicians, such as artistic director Charles Dutoit, principal guest Pinchas Zukerman and the esteemed permanent associate conductor Grzegorz Nowak. The group's repertoire has encompassed many different strands of music throughout its history, including the core classics, film scores and the music of the 21st century. 2016's roster includes everything from a celebration of Mahler's Symphony No.2 to Dame Evelyn Glennie's interpretation of Daugherty's Dreamachine.
