Royal Ascot: Europe’s best-attended race meeting

The highlight of Ascot's racing season, Royal Ascot is one of the most famous and prestigious events in the British horse racing calendar. Founded by Queen Anne in 1711, the inaugural event – known as Her Majesty's Plate – offered a prize of 100 guineas to the winning horse (providing they were over 12 stone and the age of six).

In 1813, Parliament passed an Act to ensure that the grounds would remain a public racecourse and over 300 years since the maiden race, the event still plays host to the Queen and other members of the Royal Family who, along with 300,000 members of the public, make Royal Ascot Europe’s best-attended race meeting.

As well as being one of the biggest horse race meetings of the year, Royal Ascot has also become a major social event. Ladies' Day is well known for prompting a sea of fascinators and elaborate hats, while the gentlemen in attendance are expected to wear black top hats. The press coverage of the attendees and what they are wearing often exceeds coverage of the actual racing, with speculation and betting on the colour of the Queen's hat of particular interest.
