More About Riverdance - Interval Filler to Showstopper

This Irish step dancing show first originated during the Eurovision Song Contest. At the 1981 contest Irish folk band Planxty performed three-part baroque piece Timedance, which Bill Whelan would go on to develop further in the 1994 Eurovision contest when the raw beginnings of today's show were introduced into the contest's seven minute long interval. The performance was an immediate success, sparking a standing ovation from the audience and earning it the title of one of the most popular Eurovision intervals since the competition's inception in 1956.

After an audio recording of the composition kept Wet Wet Wet's 'Love is All Around' off the top spot, the show was brought to life on stage during the beginning of 1995. Starring the lead dancers from the original performance - including Michael Flatley and Jean Butler - the show's initial 5 week run was a sell-out success, with sales of over 120,000.

Telling the tale of Ireland's history through a series of imaginatively choreographed dance routines, this show's endless creativity has won over the hearts of audiences across the world - including those of royalty and in Broadway.
