The club was founded in 1906 and have played their home matches at Ciudad Deportiva de Riazor stadium since 1944. Most of this time has been spent in Segunda Division, with the team bouncing up to the first division every few years, earning them the nickname the “Elevator Team”. They spent a solid 20 consecutive years in the top tier of Spanish football, La Liga, from the ‘90s and through the following decade.
