Philadelphia Fusion was founded in 2017 and their home matches can be played at venues including Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, The Met in Philadelphia, and Fusion Arena in Philadelphia. The team is owned by the owner of Fusion University, Comcast Spectacor; Fusion University is an academy team that competes in the Overwatch Contenders. Philadelphia Fusion are members of the Overwatch League, which also includes Washington Justice, Houston Outlaws, Boston Uprising, New York Excelsior, Toronto Defiant, Paris Eternal, Atlanta Reign, London Spitfire, Dallas Fuel, Los Angeles Valiant, Vancouver Titans, Guangzhou Charge, Shanghai Dragons, Chengdu Hunters, and Hangzhou Dynasty. The Overwatch League is a professional league focused on esports and the game Overwatch, which is produced by Blizzard Entertainment. Announced in 2016, the league’s opening season was in 2018 and the total prize pool was US$3.5 million. Following the traditional model of sporting leagues, the OWL uses a group of permanent teams that are backed by distinct ownership groups. The league also plays in playoffs and regular season format instead of promotion and relegation which is more commonly seen in other international and esports leagues.
