Blessed with success

Founded in 1909, the Canadiens were established well before the NHL was formed. They in fact won their first Stanley Cup in 1916 when they played as part of the National Hockey Association (NHA), before a series of league mergers that resulted in the formation of the NHL. The team's first championship in the NHL era was in 1930, when they beat the Boston Bruins 2-0 in a best-of-three series. The club has had an illustrious past, however it is hard to argue that any Canadiens team was better than that of the late 1950s, which won an unprecedented five consecutive championships between 1956 and 1960. While many franchises would have been content with this championship run, the Canadiens strived for further greatness, winning four more titles during the 1960s and a further four consecutive championships between 1976 and 1979. The famous Maurice Richard

Integral to the Canadiens' success during the 1950s was Maurice Richard. Joining the team in 1942, Richard would go on to represent the club for 18 seasons and display his loyalty by never playing for another team. His goal scoring ability, leadership, physical nature of play and devotion to the team earned him an enormous degree of respect from the fan base. In a 1952 game against the Chicago Blackhawks, he scored his 325th career goal, setting what was at the time the record for the most NHL career goals. Richard won a total of eight Stanley Cups during his career, of which he was the captain for the last four championships of the famous Canadiens team dynasty between 1956 and 1960. Following the whitewash 4-0 series win against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1960 Stanley Cup finals, Richard announced his retirement and was honoured with induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
