More Sam Cooke than R. Kelly, this astonishing vocalist is truly one of a kind. Born in Los Angeles neighbourhood San Pedro, he began his music career at the age of 13. Influenced by funk and jazz, he began writing his own music while still in high school, learning the ropes at production company Drop Squad in his spare time. Signed to independent record Black Ice in 2004 he started to work on debut album Young and Free. After a couple of false starts, one of his singles reached the ear of Jive Records producer Mark Pitts, who signed the talent in October 2007.

Working alongside Usher and Asher Roth, his debut LP was finally released in 2010. Although initially a slow-seller, word of mouth buzz and critical attention pushed the record to Number 37 in the US Billboard chart, as the Californian steadily shifted more than 400,000 units. Put out in 2012, follow up effort Kaleidoscope Dream became a favourite with the critics and solidified the vocalist's place as one of R&B's best-loved stars.
