From Jack Charlton to Juninho

Founded in 1876, Middlesbrough FC became a permanently professional football club at the turn of the 20th century and achieved their highest ever league placing, third in Division One, just before the outbreak of World War I. After winning the Division Two title in 1929, the team enjoyed 25 years in the top flight, a period in which England international George Camsell became their record scorer with an astonishing 325 goals. Middlesbrough won their first major trophy under Jack Charlton when they lifted the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1976 but very nearly folded in the mid-1980s due to financial difficulties. Thankfully a last-minute consortium bid saved the club and in 1992 and they became a founding member of the Premier League. Under the guidance of Bryan Robson, Middlesbrough FC attracted several star names in the mid-'90s, including Brazilians Juninho and Emerson and Italian Fabrizio Ravanelli. They also reached the FA Cup and League Cup final in the same year and were the only side to defeat Manchester United in their treble-winning season. Middlesbrough FC's golden age

Middlesbrough FC enjoyed their most triumphant period under Steve McLaren, who guided them to a League Cup win in 2004, their highest ever Premier League placing, and European qualification for the first time in their history. He then led Boro to a Cup final against Seville, having previously overturned 3-0 deficits in both the quarter and semi-finals. A second future England manager, Gareth Southgate, then took charge for three years before the club opted for a merry-go-round approach, going through ten different coaches in as many years. The highly-experienced Tony Pulis took over in 2017 with the goal of leading the club back into the Premier League. Prolific forward Britt Assombalonga, former England Under-21 internationals Dael Fry, Jonny Howson and Grant Leadbitter and returning local boy Stewart Downing were just some of the key names he had at his disposal.
