Like many of his contemporaries, Welsh-born Watson gained his first taste of the limelight at Cambridge University as part of the famed Footlights performance group. Appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2001 with fellow alumni Tim Key, his group earned a nomination for Best Newcomer. He followed this with further accolades for his work, including the Time Out Critics' Choice gong in 2006, around the time he was starting to gain national exposure. The following year saw him wow crowds at Edinburgh with another innovative show where material was informed by a text message service. By 2009 he was also dipping his toe into the world of rock 'n' roll, hosting the annual NME Awards at O2 Academy Brixton.
