Marcus Miller has a busy international touring schedule. He can often be found playing at major jazz festivals and he sometimes hosts jazz cruises. He plays in European cities including Berlin, Prague and Amsterdam. He makes many live appearances in his native America and often performs in the U.K.
Trivia
In addition to appearing on many successful records, Miller also worked on television and in film. In 1978 he became a member of the Saturday Night Live house band for a season. He returned to SNL in 1988 working as musical director and bass player for two seasons. Miller has contributed to many film sound tracks, and has composed specially for movies including About Last Night (2014), Good Hair (2009) and Boomerang (1992).

Marcus Miller is an accomplished bass player and jazz composer. He was born in Brooklyn in 1959 and took up music at an early age. At just 15, Miller began to build a very successful career as a session musician. His bass performances can be heard on hundreds of hit songs and he contributed his arranging and producing skills to many records. He has recorded with pop and rock stars like Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan and Billy Idol. His work as a 'side man' won him three consecutive 'Most Valuable Player' awards from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Before going solo in the 1990s, Miller had some major song writing successes. He composed many of the tracks on Miles Davis' 1986 album Tutu. He began releasing solo records in the 1980s but his solo career really took off in the 1990s. His recent projects include playing the trio S.M.V with Stanley Clark and Victor Wooten in 2008. In 2009 he put a new band together for his 'Tutu Revisited' project which celebrated his collaboration with Miles Davis and toured for two years. He did another Davis project in 2012 with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. Miller began working with UNESCO in 2012, the following year he was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace. His work was related to their Slave Route project, which draws attention to the history and legacy of the slave trade.
Breakthrough
Marcus Miller was a successful sideman for many years. He began releasing solo albums in the 1980s but his 1993 record The Sun Don't Lie can be considered the real breakthrough of his solo career. This laid back record reached No. 7 on Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and broke into the top 100 on the R&B Albums chart.
Hit Records
Marcus Miller appeared as a side man on many hit records before finding success as a solo artist. His albums include the funk infused Tales (1995) and Live and More (1997). Recent releases include Silver Rain (2005) and Free (2008) which features the Grammy-nominated track 'Blast'. In 2015 he released Afrodeezia on the jazz label Blue Note. This record was inspired by his work with UNESCO and reflects the varied musical traditions and innovations of the African diaspora.
