A burgeoning music scene in the city of Manchester in the early 1960s led the Student Union at the University of Manchester to utilise space in its student building as live entertainment venues in an effort to accommodate public demand as well as that of its significant student body. The very first concert was held in 1963 as jazz artist Humphrey Littleton and His Band inaugurated what was known as the Main Debating Hall (Manchester Academy 2) on the first floor of the Steven Biko student building.
