LOSC Lille - a club of two golden ages

Formed as a merger between two of Ligue 1's founding members, LOSC Lille have enjoyed two golden periods half a century apart. LOSC Lille rule post-war era

LOSC Lille were conceived when two of the region's biggest football clubs, Sporting Club Fivois and Olympique Lillois, decided to pool their resources together towards the end of the Second World War. This merger won them Ligue 1 in only their second season and continued to flourish throughout the following decade with another championship title, four second-place finishes and five Coupe de France trophies. Sadly, LOSC Lille struggled to maintain their early winning streak, suffering relegation to Ligue 2 in 1956 and later abandoning their status as a professional team. However, thanks to the arrival of chairman Michel Seydoux and coach Claude Puel in the early '00s, the club then entered a second golden period. They became a regular on the European circuit, achieving memorable victories over AC Milan, Manchester United and Liverpool, won the 2004 Intertoto Cup and in 2005 achieved their highest Ligue 1 placing since 1951, when they finished second to Olympique Lyonnais. French football's sleeping giants awake

The most impressive feat in LOSC Lille's history, however, was achieved in 2011 when Rudi Garcia guided them to a league and cup double. The former was the club's first major silverware in 56 years, while the latter saw them beat defending champions Paris Saint-Germain in a hotly-contested final at the Stade de France. LOSC Lille subsequently enjoyed two seasons of Champions League football and in 2016 reached the final of the Coupe de la Ligue for the first time. The team also benefited from a move from the historic Stade Grimonprez-Jooris to the much larger and more advanced Stade Pierre-Mauroy in 2012. Managed by one of their former defenders, Christophe Galtier, LOSC Lille's current side boasts several internationals including Ivory Coast's Nicolas Pepe, Portugal's Jose Fonte and Morocco's Hamza Mendyl, as well as French forward Loic Remy, who has received more than 30 caps for his country.
