Entertainment for a century

Founded in 1840, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Society was at first without a permanent concert hall to call home. The Liverpool architect John Cunningham was appointed to design its first concert hall in 1844, to seat an audience of 2,100 and house an orchestra of 250 musicians. A correspondent for "The Times" said at the grand opening of the venue in August 1849 that it was "one of the finest and best adapted to music that I ever entered". The original building sadly has not survived, being ravaged by a devastating fire in 1933, and despite valiant efforts from the firemen fighting the blaze, the new organ which had been installed only three years before was damaged beyond repair or rescue along with the building. In June 1937 the construction of the new Philharmonic Hall began and by June 1939 it had officially reopened with an inaugural performance conducted by the famous Sir Thomas Beecham. The Philharmonic Hall has undergone numerous renovations since then and will undoubtedly be entertaining audiences for a long time still.
