Trivia
Lights real name is Valerie Anne Poxleitner. She was born in Timmins, Ontario, and spent her childhood travelling the world with her missionary parents, including bouts in the Philippines and Jamaica. Lights is married to Beau Bokan, current lead singer of Blessthefall, and former member of Take the Crown. The couple wed in 2012 and they had a daughter in 2014 who they named Rocket Wild Bokan. While pregnant, Lights was busy working on her album Little Machines, and she told Idolator that she recorded vocals for it while she was in labor.
Singer
Lights' electro pop sound is very much on trend, but her sophisticated melodies and beautiful vocal performances are timeless. Lights was home-schooled by her missionary parents and her curriculum included music lessons. She got a guitar at age 11 and started writing songs shortly after. By 13 she was producing recordings on an eight-track, and in high school she played and sang in a metal band called Shovel Face. These days she is an experienced songwriter who regularly performs to audiences of thousands with several successful albums under her belt. As well as performing her own music, she has also appeared as a guest artist with various bands. You can hear her voice on Ten Second Epic's "Every Day," Owl City's "The Yacht Club," and on Silverstein's "The End."
Breakthrough
Lights' professional career began with a songwriting gig for Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 2006; her work included contributions to the TV series Instant Star, which told the story of a recent music competition winner getting started in the industry. In 2007, broadcaster and musician Jian Ghomeshi became her manager and in 2008 she began touring in the U.S. and Canada. That year also brought the release of her single "Drive My Soul," which reached No. 18 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart. She released her first full-length album The Listening in 2009, which reached the Billboard Top 200 in the U.S. That year she won a Juno Award for Best New Artist, and in 2010 The Listening was nominated for Pop Album of the Year at the same awards ceremony.
Hit Albums
Lights' 2010 EP, Acoustic, stripped away most of the electronics that she had become known for, putting the focus on her songwriting. It did especially well in her native Canada. Lights released the full-length album Siberia in 2011, and it was nominated for a Juno Award for Best Pop Album of the Year. This album was a more mature sound that combined her talent for light and pretty electropop with grittier sounds reminiscent of dubstep and hip hop. She released an acoustic version of Siberia in 2013. In the summer of 2014, Lights released Little Machines. The record was her most successful to date, debuting at No. 5 on the Canadian album charts and at No. 34 on the U.S. charts.
Show Experience
Lights' acoustic performances have the chilled-out atmosphere of a Sarah McLachlan or Dido concert. They often take place in seated venues, so they're perfect for those who like to enjoy their music in comfort. Her acoustic sets are a great opportunity for fans to hear different versions of electro songs they know and love. Those with Lights tickets for full-scale electro shows are much more energetic, edgy affairs. You may want to bring your dancing shoes for those performances. Her charisma on stage, ability to play several instruments, and astounding vocals create a captivating show.
