Based on The Lady of The Camellias by Alexander Dumas, Verdi's La Traviata is a classic opera about tragic love. Set in three acts with a libretto written by Francesco Maria Piave, La Traviata can literally be translated to The Fallen Woman, alluding to the opera's theme of forbidden love. Performed for the first time in March 1853, the now world-renowned opera was considered a failure, causing Verdi to question whether his work of art was at fault or the singers.

Deemed morally questionable' when first staged at Her Majesty's Theatre in London in 1856, La Traviata tells the story about young courtesan Violetta Valery. Having recovered from an illness she throws a lavish party at her Paris salon, inviting all she knows to celebrate. At the party she meets a new admirer, Alfredo Germot, a young man who has adored Violetta from afar. Declaring his love to her, Violetta's harsh understanding of romance is challenged, offering the young woman an attempt at happiness.
A recurring act at London's storied Royal Opera House, La Traviata is a cornerstone production in the opera scene, performed on several stages around the world. Intended to be a period piece, the opera has been staged in various fashions, from its original 19th century setting to more modern adaptations as of late.
