Korn are heralded as one of the most important bands of the late 1990s and cited as the band that brought nu-metal to the mainstream. Influenced by funk metal bands like Faith No More and Red Hot Chili Peppers and hip hop artists including Dr Dre and Cypress Hill, the California band were one of the first to blend the two unbendable genres - with some bagpipes thrown in for good measure - to create a sound all of their own.
In 1994, they released their groundbreaking eponymous debut album, which soared to Number 1 on the Heatseekers chart and earned them a slot supporting metal godfather Ozzy Osbourne. Music critics praised the LP for "positively encouraging America's formerly introverted, apathetic misfits to thrust a livid middle finger in the face of high school jocks who would traditionally bundle them into a locker". Based on themes of sex and revenge, their double platinum selling sophomore effort Life is Peachy won them a Best Metal Performance Grammy nomination for 'Shoots and Ladders'. By the time of their third album, Follow the Leader, the group had enough of a reputation to warrant collaborations with big name vocalists like Fred Durst and Ice Cube and their popularity was cemented when the record soared to the top of the Billboard 200.
The group took a turn in direction with their first self-published record, Take a Look in the Mirror, which saw the group move towards a more experimental sound that proved to be popular fans - evidenced by its top 10 chart position. Their influence on the nu-metal scene cannot be equalled and the band still retain their cult popularity today. In 2017, they'll embark on a UK tour that no nu metal fan would want to miss.
